Demolition Begins at 4000 Wisconsin

Demolition of 4000 Wisconsin Avenue is now underway to make way for Upton Place, the 689 unit apartment building on the southern end of Tenleytown. The project, by Donohoe Development and Aimco, adding nearly 100,000 s.f. of retail, is expected to complete at the end of 2023. Donohoe will preserve the large underground parking garage with 825 spaces, and add two residential towers above. Donohoe has long had a land lease on the property, and previously housed Fannie Mae, which also occupied its own site next door until consolidating in downtown DC. SK+I designed the building's replacement, an architectural bungle designed by Stinson Capelli that featured tacky glass pyramids, inexplicable Olympic flame holders and an odd mixture of colors, shapes, and styles. The Washington Post back in the day proclaimed that its "Proportions are awkward all around, and the top floor is particularly graceless -- it should have been shorn off or, at least, stepped back." Demolition was the better cure.
