The building, then a fading beige row house with a shuttered Chinese carry-out, needed a rebirth in line with Dupont Circle's vibrant and eclectic vibe, and Mikko needed the proper space to showcase Finnish-style herring, breads and pastries, later adding other Nordic specialties unrepresented in DC's varied dining scene.   Offering morning and evening victuals (coffee and cocktails), the new owners added unthinkable colors to the monochrome block, with a shockingly red, white, and blue facade reflective of the Nordic heritage of Mikko's native Finland and bordering Scandanavian nations, earning a dedicated local following and envious reviews along the way.
